Frequently asked questions
Elementis Pigments has set worldwide standards with the highest-quality pigments in the broadest range of colors.

Iron and Chromium Oxides
Manufactured to extreme tolerance limits for particle size, color properties, purity and uniformity providing superb hiding power, maximizing tinting strength, durability, and excellent chemical resistance.

  • Kroma Reds® - The first commercially available precipitated red iron oxide pigments yielding clean, bright mass and tint colors with excellent dispersibility.
  • Copperas Reds® - Elementis is the only manufacturer of Copperas Red iron oxides offering a broad range of reds from the lightest salmon shade to a very dark purplish red. They are spheroidal in shape and have excellent heat stability and chemical purity.
  • Yellows - Categorized depending upon their oil absorption, viscosity and dispersing characteristics. All yellows from Elementis have good wetting characteristics, bleed resistance, and lightfastness.
  • Blacks - Synthetic black iron oxides from Elementis give rich, bluish-black tints and have great hiding power.
  • Greens - Chromium oxide greens have excellent stability and are used when chemical and heat resistance are needed.
  Natural Iron Oxides
The Elementis line of natural oxides have properties similar to the synthetics, but due to their natural origins, are somewhat lower in brightness, chemical purity, and tinting strength. This line includes metallic browns and umbers all of which can be used to lower the pigment cost of many primer and topcoat formulations where high chroma is not required.
  Carbon Black
SUPERJET® Carbon Black is a black, amorphous, carbon pigment produced by the thermal decomposition of natural hydrocarbons. It is manufactured by a modern process in equipment designed for exacting control of color, tint, strength, and oil absorption. Its mass color is jet black, and its tinting hue is a bluish black. It is suggested for coloring and tinting of paints, enamels, primers, plastics, fabrics, inks, and other similar applications. The Elementis LB-1011 is an excellent choice for applications requiring a cost effective high quality black pigment.

Barium Sulfate Extenders
Sparmite ® Barytes, from Elementis Pigments, is a line of extender pigments. The Sparmite products are specified because of their chemical inertness and insolubility, high purity, high refractive index, low abrasiveness, low oil absorption, ready wettability, easy grinding and high density. Applications for Sparmite Barytes include industrial primers, trade sales paints, gloss enamels, powder coatings. Their low absorption imparts excellent flow and leveling properties. These chemically inert materials provide clean tints and colors. When used in semi-gloss latex paints, they speed the dry time, give harder and tougher film properties and have little effect on gloss.
